According to Hindu theology, whenever righteousness (Dharma) declines and evil (Adharma) rises, the Supreme Lord descends to Earth to restore balance. These descents are known as Avatars. Lord Vishnu, the preserver of the universe, is famously known for his ten main incarnations, the Dashavatara.
The Evolution of Life
Fascinatingly, the Dashavatara closely mirrors the modern theory of evolution:
- Matsya (The Fish): Life begins in the water.
- Kurma (The Tortoise): Life moves to amphibians (water and land).
- Varaha (The Boar): Complete land animals.
- Narasimha (Half-Man, Half-Lion): The transition from animal to human.
- Vamana (The Dwarf): Early, undeveloped humans.
- Parashurama (The Warrior): Early humans living in forests with weapons.
- Rama (The Perfect King): Civilized man living by rules and morals.
- Krishna (The Divine Statesman): Advanced human, mastering politics, love, and philosophy.
- Buddha (The Ascetic): The enlightened human seeking inner peace above worldly desires.
- Kalki (The Future Avatar): Yet to come, expected at the end of the current age (Kali Yuga).
