The ringing of bells, the rhythmic chanting of mantras, the fragrance of incense, and the mesmerizing glow of a multi-tiered brass lamp—this is Aarti, one of the most powerful and emotional rituals in Hinduism.
What Does Aarti Mean?
The word 'Aarti' is derived from the Sanskrit word 'Aratrika', which means something that removes the darkness (ratrika). It is an act of total surrender and immense love, where light is offered to the deity.
The Five Elements
During Aarti, the five elements of nature are offered to the divine: Space (through the sound of the bell), Air (through the waving of the yak-tail fan), Fire (through the lit lamp), Water (offered in a conch shell), and Earth (through flowers).
The Internal Aarti
While the external Aarti is beautiful, the true purpose is internal. By focusing on the divine light of the lamp, devotees aim to ignite the light of knowledge within their own hearts, burning away ego and ignorance.
